Hello Cheese and Wine Lovers!

2022 starts with a lot of flavors and for the month of love and friendship, we take you to one of the most delicious corners of the Swiss-German region. We are knocking on the door of St-Gallen to share with you a little bit of its terroir and its wonderful flavors and aromas.

About the region

St-Gallen has 220 hectares of vineyards and is located in the eastern part of the German-speaking region of Switzerland, together with Graubünden (410 ha). Most of the vineyards are located on steep, south-facing slopes, which, due to their sun exposure, offer ideal conditions for growing grapes.

In addition, other factors that make this region ideal for viticulture are its proximity to Lake Constance and the foehn winds in the Rhine Valley and the Sarganserland region. Likewise, the variety of soil types attributes very particular characteristics to its wines.

The most planted varieties are Pinot Noir and Müller-Thurgau; although, we also find other international varieties such as Chardonnay, PIWI with which specialties are produced.

About Weingut Stegeler

Weingut Stegeler is run by siblings Elisabeth and Jakob Federer who took over their parents’ vineyard and revived it with innovative and ecological ideas. Today they plant seven different grape varieties on 1.9 hectares, including PIWI varieties.

Their philosophy is based on the idea that the quality of the wines comes from the vineyard, which is why their viticulture practices are directed to the care and attention of the ecosystem.

Stegeler Red 2017

We chose this wine for its aromatic potential and its particular flavor. This blend is composed mainly of Pinot Noir but has a bit of Diolinoir, Cabernet Jura and Cabernet Cortis that make this wine something totally special.

Stegeler Red 2017 is a garnet-colored wine with brown trim, medium-high aromatic intensity, aromas of red fruits such as cherry and pomegranate, and black fruits such as blackberries and cassis.  It also has spicy touches of menthol and earthy aromas. In the mouth it has medium-high acidity, its tannins are light but present and fine thanks to the time spent in the barrel.  Its persistence in the mouth is so long that it will allow you to enjoy its flavors for much longer.

Swiss Artisanal Cheese and Wine Pairing

Thanks to its lovely salty taste and crumbly texture, Schwarzes Schaf is a perfect cheese to pair with the Stegeler Red 2017.  With its good acidity and well-polished tannins, we have as a result an unparalleled fusion of flavors, very lasting and totally unforgettable.

A different sensation, but equally enjoyable, is what you will find in the pairing with the Ziegen Perle.  This goat’s milk cheese has particular notes of fresh butter and a slight acid finish that is well received by the fruity and spicy profile of the wine leaving in your mouth an incomparable flavor. You will not stop eating!

We know how important it is for you to celebrate and enjoy this month of February with your friends and partner, and a delicious way to do it is by opening an Apéro Box from St-Gallen. Enjoy with someone special!
