Introduction :

The canton of Neuchâtel is located in Western Switzerland also known as the Swiss Romandie.  Lake Neuchâtel offers the ideal climate for the cultivation of grapevines, and the mountainous Jura region is perfect for raising dairy cows.  It is therefore no surprise that Neuchâtel offers delicious wines and artisanal cheeses.  The canton is also known for the distillation of absinthe – but we’ll come back to that later!

Johana and Lhney did not have to travel far to visit the canton of Neuchâtel since it is here that the headquarters of L’Atelier du Fromage is located.  It was very nice to visit our local cheese dairies and taste the delicious artisanal cheeses of our region that we love so much.  Follow us in our discovery of Neuchâtel!

The green fairy of Val-de-Travers :

Absinthe, also known as, “la fée verte” (the green fairy), is a distilled alcoholic beverage that was banned for nearly 100 years due to its shady past before becoming legal in 2005. It was once believed that absinthe caused hallucinations or insanity, but this myth has since been scientifically proven to be false.

The birthplace of absinthe is the Val-de-Travers region of canton Neuchâtel, which is located in the mountains near to the French border.  Absinthe is made from the medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium (grand wormwood), anise, and fennel seeds.  According to the secret recipe of each distiller, it may contain other aromatic plants such as lemon balm, hyssop, and mint. Today the local trade association is trying to obtain a protected geographical indication (PGI) for “Absinthe du Val-de-Travers” as a local product.
